In subsequent months, Rodrigo also released her two follow-up singles, “Deja Vu” and “Good 4 U.” After the debut of “Deja Vu,” Rodrigo became the first artist to have her first two proper singles debut inside Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10.
So who hurt Olivia, and why won’t they go driving with her?
Shortly after “Drivers License” was unleashed upon the world, speculation began swirling that Rodrigo was singing about her HSMTMTS costar and onscreen love interest, Joshua Bassett. Though their relationship was never confirmed, the pair were rumored to be dating behind the scenes—that is, until Rodrigo posted a TikTok in August 2020 captioned, “And that’s on failed relationships.” The video also featured “All I Want,” the original Rodrigo song that her character Nini sings to his character, Ricky.

Another reason “Drivers License” has been linked to Bassett is this lyric: “Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me.” Fans think this is a reference to Bassett’s July 2020 song “Anyone Else.” That one goes, “How am I supposed to think about anything else? How am I to go on keeping this to myself? I am done pretending I want anyone else, anyone else, anyone else.” Even SNL name-checked Bassett in its “Drivers License” sketch, which Bassett apparently took as a compliment—writing “dream come true?” on TikTok after the show.
Rodrigo, however, has demurred when asked to name the source of her heartache. “I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song,” she told Billboard. “It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important.”
Isn’t a “blonde girl” also mentioned in the song?
This is when Sabrina Carpenter supposedly enters the chat. When “Drivers License” was released, the Twitterverse turned its attention to Bassett’s rumored relationship with Carpenter, a fellow Disney Channel alum (she starred on Girl Meets World). These two reportedly began hanging out around the same time Rodrigo posted her breakup TikTok. Carpenter and Bassett made a video of their own on the app, dressing up as Sharkboy and Lavagirl for Halloween.

In the song, Rodrigo adds that the unnamed “blonde girl” “always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about.” Carpenter, as it so happens, is 22.
When asked whether she’s referring to Carpenter, though, Rodrigo gave the tried and true “I don’t know her” line. “I think we’ve met once or twice in passing, but I’ve never had a conversation with her,” she told Radio.com. “I don’t think I could write a song that was meaningful or emotional about somebody that I don’t know.”
But didn’t Bassett and Carpenter release their own songs in response?
Naturally. Before the world even had time to Google “Who is the man who broke Olivia’s heart?” both Bassett and Carpenter had issued their own musical statements. Bassett’s aptly titled “Lie Lie Lie” was released on January 14, six days after Rodrigo’s song; Carpenter’s “Skin” dropped on January 22. “Been stuck in my head since I heard it!!!” Bassett wrote on his Instagram Story, per Billboard, alongside the “Skin” cover art. “Congratulations @sabrinacarpenter on ‘Skin,’ the new label, & all that’s to come!!!”
