Spider-Man: Lotus writer/director Gavin J. Konop recently debuted a new trailer for the upcoming fan film.

The emotional trailer features a ton of previously unseen footage, including a fresh look at the fan film’s take on Green Goblin. The upcoming non-profit fan film is loosely based on the popular Spider-Man stories “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man” from 1983’s The Amazing Spider-Man #248 — which centers on Spider-Man visiting a terminally ill kid — and 2002’s Spider-Man: Blue — which examines Peter Parker’s relationship with Gwen Stacy and sees the young superhero returning to the location where Gwen was killed by the Green Goblin.

“Following the tragic death of his former girlfriend – seemingly caused by his own attempt to save her – Peter Parker (Warden Wayne) lingers in his guilt of the past, questioning whether the curse of his alter ego should be buried for good,” reads the Spider-Man: Lotus synopsis. “When he’s met by the news that a terminally ill child has requested to meet Spider-Man, Peter contemplates the decision to comfort him in his final days.”

What Is the Controversy Surrounding Spider-Man: Lotus?

Spider-Man: Lotus was initially positively received by the Marvel fandom when the project was first announced. However, after several screenshots were released online showing Warden Wayne — the actor who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Lotus — making racist and homophobic comments, the project became riddled with controversy. After Konop released an official statement condemning the actor’s past mistakes, several followers began sharing screenshots that suggested the writer-director had also made similarly racist comments on Instagram. This led to Lotus‘ VFX team removing themselves from the fan film and Konop deleting his Twitter account.

Konop eventually returned to Twitter on July 3, 2023. Five days later, on July 8, he announced that Spider-Man: Lotus would premiere for free on YouTube on Aug. 10. “So, after three and a half years of work, I can finally say that Spider-Man: Lotus is coming close to the finish line. And I never thought I’d actually be saying that bc all of this started as the dream of a kid. And now it’s become the creation of hundreds of artists who have put so much time and effort into the movie,” stated Konop in a video message shared on Twitter. “I made this video as a tribute to not only the journey of making the movie but also as a thank you to the entire cast and crew who have put everything they have into making this movie a reality. So, from that little kid who always wanted to make his Spider-Man movie, thank you.”

Spider-Man: Lotus is set to premiere on YouTube on Aug. 10.
