Spider-Man: Lotus writer and director Gavin J. Konop has been accused of abandoning the crowdfunded fan film following multiple racism allegations against himself and Lotus star Warden Wayne.

The accusations began after followers noticed that Konop, who had been on a break from social media since the racism allegations began in June 2022, had deleted his personal Twitter account. Several followers expressed disappointment that those who had contributed to the Spider-Man: Lotus campaign had lost their money and would not receive the final product as they were promised. However, Twitter user @luffymarcomin noticed that Konop’s Instagram account was still active and reached out for an explanation, telling the writer-director that “this radio silence and deletion of your Twitter profile isn’t filling me with confidence.” Konop assured the fan that Spider-Man: Lotus would be released, adding that he will provide “updates on my YouTube channel when I have them.”

The initial controversy surrounding Spider-Man: Lotus began in June 2022 after several screenshots were shared on social media that showed Wayne, who plays Peter Parker in the fan film, making and homophobic comments. The actor released a statement on June 18, apologizing for the comments he made when he was younger and stating, “I’m embarrassed and sad at who I was, and I’m sorry to anyone I may have hurt years ago, or to anyone I may hurt now by revealing this information.” After Konop also released an official statement, condemning the actor’s past mistakes, several followers began sharing screenshots that suggested the writer-director had also made similarly racist comments on Instagram. Konop addressed these images, stating that they were a mix of “photoshopped screenshots of me saying outrageous things, to screenshots of things that old admins had sent from my account several years ago, to actual old messages that do need to be addressed, to an entire situation that needs to be addressed all on its own.” He stated that he will deliver a formal response after he returns from a social media break.

Spider-Man: Lotus Will Adapt Two Popular Stories

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Lotus was released in October 2021. The non-profit fan film is loosely based on two popular Spider-Man stories: “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man” and Spider-Man: Blue. “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man” by Roger Stern, Ron Frenz, Terry Austin, Bob Sharen and Diana Albers is from 1983’s The Amazing Spider-Man #248 and centers on a terminally ill kid named Timothy Harrison, whom Spider-Man visits and divulges a number of his secrets, including his origin. The story was famously adapted in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Spider-Man: Blue by Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, Steve Buccellato, Richard Starkings and Wes Abbott was published in 2002. The story sees Peter Parker returning to the location where Gwen Stacy was killed by the Green Goblin, with a flashback adding new depth to their relationship.

Spider-Man: Lotus does not currently have a release date, but was originally expected to debut in 2022.
