They do say that variety is the spice of life and if that’s the case then Neymar Jr‘s hair has seen more action than Dubai’s dedicated spice Souq. Who could forget that copper mullet, the dreadlocks and the ensuing cavalcade of permed peroxide tops?
We asked international hairstylist Adrian Clark to dissect some of the footballer’s most iconic looks, and offer a few tips on how to recreate them yourself. All you need is a fine set of clippers and a hefty dose of bravery.

THE STYLE: A retro low fade with long fringe. Let’s just call it ‘The Neymar’.
HOW TO GET IT: Buzz the back and sides off with a zero clipper then break out the straightening irons (GHD non-negotiable, of course). Iron out the top to absolute straight submission. Once it’s stick-straight, work in a generous glob of Oribe Rough Luxury Moulding Wax and shape it like a kung- fu master: wax on, wax off.

THE STYLE: The 1970’s curly mullet perm. This look left a deep scar of shame on many but Neymar wore it with pride along with his Brazil jersey.
HOW TO GET IT: After expertly shaping the back and sides it’s a matter of daily care to keep those curls in shape. I recommend you shampoo and condition with Aveda Be Curly and then complete with their curl enhancer. Apply this to damp hair straight from the shower and then leave it to naturally air dry for best results.

THE STYLE: Sporting a fine pompadour and fade before kicking off for his country.
HOW TO GET IT: This is admittedly a style best created by the barber as it’s a highly skillful cut. However, if you’re feeling adventurous remember precision is key here as it’s all about the fade to ledge transition. Perhaps relinquish the clippers to a flatmate or spouse to work on the fade? For maximum quiff-age use a roller hairbrush and a hair dryer. Use old school Dax Wave & Groom heavy hold pomade for a sleek finish then spray into position with Hanz De Fuko Style Lock Hairspray.

THE LOOK: I’m calling this the ‘never offside in peroxide’.
HOW TO GET IT: By all means have fun playing with a scissor cut on the top but it’s advisable to avoid home experimentation with peroxide. This is a great look to drop when you’re freshly out of isolation though. Just be sure to throw on some Oribe Rough Luxury Rock Hard gel to complete that 1980’s excess wet look.

THE LOOK: Close shave with a hairline as strong as his strike.
HOW TO GET IT: This look really works on afro or very curly textured hair. Buzzing the sides and back with a zero is one thing, but trying to shave in that part line with goal scoring accuracy is another matter. You’ll need a pro set of clippers for this one. If you don’t own a set, don’t even attempt it. Otherwise, I’d recommend that you wait until you can get back to visit your beloved barber, then you can complete the look with a good Moroccan oil moulding cream.

THE LOOK: New-age dreadlocks combined with tribal tram lines – because one hairstyle simply wasn’t enough.
HOW TO GET IT: It’s a long story, and will take a long time. Basically start growing now and we’ll talk again in a few weeks for phase two. Meantime order in some bees wax. Just bear in mind if executed correctly you can strike a hairstyle goal here, but this look can also get you a yellow card if not mastered to perfection.

THE LOOK: A stylish burst-fade mocha mohawk at Paris fashion week last year.
HOW TO GET IT: If you’re growing out all over color, this would be a perfect evolution. Leave a generous cappuccino froth on top and introduce a number three blade to the sides. Notice the precision edging on the side burns, not to be overlooked if trying this at home. I recommend using a generous helping of Fudge Hair Shaper texturizing creme to really hold that crested wave in place.

THE LOOK: Shocking pink. But why are we not shocked?
HOW TO GET IT: I’d advise experimenting with semi-permanent colors or wash in wash out if you’re tempted to stray into this territory. There’s no going back with permanent dyes. The only way back is the buzz cut – so consider yourself warned. If you do find the courage to go there, I recommend using lashings of Muk Hair Care Vivid Colour Lock Conditioner to stop the color from fading.
