On October 28, the trailer for the fan-made film Spider-Man: Lotus — which is not affiliated with Marvel or Sony — premiered on GJ Konop’s YouTube channel. Set after Gwen Stacy’s death, Spider-Man: Lotus focuses on Peter Parker’s indecision over putting away his Spider-Man suit for good. However, when a terminally ill child requests to see Spider-Man, Peter’s decision becomes even more difficult. The implied threat of the Green Goblin at the end of the trailer may also be another factor in Peter’s decision to keep saving the city as Spider-Man.

Gavin J. Konop’s trailer was trending on Twitter the day that it was released, and there are multiple reasons why fans are getting excited about the release of the film in summer 2022. The story focuses more on Peter Parker as a person and his dilemma over whether he should stop being Spider-Man. This is a change of pace from most Marvel and Sony Spider-Man movies and gives Peter more dimension as a character. Konop’s decision to show how Peter deals with Gwen’s death will allow for more character development and make the film more emotional.

The tone of Spider-Man: Lotus seems to be darker than the official Marvel and Sony Spider-Man films. Focusing on serious topics like death and terminal illness without showcasing a fight between Spider-Man and a fan-favorite villain is an unexpected storytelling choice that will force the script to bring these issues to the forefront of the narrative. This somber tone is unusual for the web-slinger, and any similar scenes that have been in previous Spider-Man movies (e.g. Uncle Ben’s death and Gwen Stacy’s death) have only lasted for one or two scenes.

Fans have also been fawning over the visuals and cinematography in this new trailer. The lighting, editing and CGI are incredibly impressive for a fan-made movie. The costume that Spider-Man wears in this trailer has been getting a lot of attention too, as it is extremely well-made and looks flawless. The soundtrack accompanying the trailer, composed by Will Cookson and Carl Abelgas, has also been a point of discussion, as it sets the tone for the trailer perfectly. Like everything else, the poster is very high quality for a fan-made movie and is reminiscent of posters for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Connections between the trailer and the Marvel Spider-Man comics have already been drawn online. Spider-Man meeting the terminally ill boy has been linked with the 1984 comic The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man, and according to the Spider-Man: Lotus IMDb page, the terminally ill child’s name is Tim Harrison — the same name as the child in the aforementioned comic. Tuyen Powell, the actor playing Gwen Stacy in the fan film, also posted a still of a photo booth strip with pictures of Peter and Gwen from Spider-Man: Lotus compared to a similar panel from Spider-Man: Blue on Twitter. Multiple people on Twitter have compared the plot of Spider-Man: Lotus to the Marvel comic book series Spider-Man: Blue, which focuses on Spider-Man dealing with the death of Gwen Stacy.

Spider-Man: Lotus stands out from the numerous other fan-made films because of its quality and attention to detail. Most of the fan films on YouTube have less refined acting and scripts and have much lower budgets. The majority of these fan films also focus on one central conflict between Spider-Man and one or more villains. The main thing that makes Spider-Man: Lotus different from the other Spider-Man fan films is the development and closer look at Spider-Man/Peter Parker as a person.

When contacted for comments about the trailer trending on Twitter, Konop said:

“The reactions to the trailer were absolutely beyond anything I could have imagined. This began as a labor of love to the character that has guided me through so much of my life, so to see this story of perseverance, self-redemption, and grief reach such a massive audience through an icon like Spider-Man has been so fulfilling to me. I owe it all to the crew, the cast, & everyone who has dedicated everything they have to make this a reality.”
