Chelsea and Barcelona have suffered a major blow after another team emerged as contenders to sign a player neither Chelsea nor Barcelona want to sign.

Blow torched
Neymar wants to leave PSG. PSG are quite keen not to carry on paying him 600 grand a week. Problem is, nobody else is all that keen on the idea of paying him that either.

Chelsea were linked, but Mauricio Pochettino is understandably not at all keen on the idea. He’s making a very clear and very obvious and almost certainly very correct attempt to move away from the PSG superstar model back towards a sort of turbo-charged version of what he had at Spurs with a young squad all pulling together in the same direction.

The Sun know this, because they did a story saying all this with the headline ‘NOT IN FOR NEY: Pochettino ‘does not want Neymar’ after he submits transfer request’.

The other European team strongly linked, again for obvious reasons, was Neymar’s former club Barcelona. But head coach Xavi was pretty unequivocal on that one earlier in the summer: “I’m surprised by the rumours. He’s not in our sports planning. I really like him as a person and a friend, but we have different priorities.”

Again, The Sun know this because they did a story on it at the time (with some bonus textbook Manchester United shoehorning) under the headline ‘NEY WAY: Xavi brutally KOs talk of Neymar return in boost to Man Utd and Chelsea.’

So how then do The Sun choose to spin the inevitable news that the very expensive and enormously high-profile Neymar has piqued Saudi Arabian interest?

Like this, obviously: ‘NEY WAY: Chelsea and Barcelona blow as mega rich Saudi side Al-Hilal ‘want to meet Neymar’s dad’ to discuss PSG transfer’

And then an intro that doesn’t so much double down on the headline as simply repeat it.

Chelsea and Barcelona have suffered a blow in their battle to sign Neymar as Al-Hilal want to discuss a transfer with his dad, according to reports.

We reckon they’ll get over it.

Kane clarity
‘Bayern Munich are set to return with a FOURTH bid for Tottenham star Harry Kane – but it will likely be rejected again’ – The Sun

‘Tottenham Hotspur are increasingly resigned to selling Harry Kane after Bayern Munich indicated they would increase their offer for the England captain to €110 million (£94.5 million)’ – The Times

Questions and answers
The Mirror want a word with Mikel Arteta. Well five words. Five questions in fact. Questions that he ‘must answer’ before the season gets under way at the weekend.

There are some unanswered questions for Arteta to ponder on the eve of a new campaign. Here Mirror Football takes a look at the most pressing of them.

Off you go then, lads.

How will the team cope without Gabriel Jesus?

Arteta and Arsenal answered this one pretty well last season, when he missed 14 games through injury and they picked up 32 points – at 2.28 per game slightly better than their record when Jesus was available. Next?

Which players is he willing to sell?

Absolutely does not have to be answered before the season starts, because the deadline doesn’t close until almost three weeks later.

Can he keep two goalkeepers happy?

Can you see into the future, Mikel, you ludicrous fraud?

How will he manage Saka’s workload?

This is a valid question at least, given Saka is still only 21 and hasn’t missed a Premier League game in the last two seasons and now there’s the Champions League on top. But the answer is probably going to be ‘rest him for some games’ to be honest.

Can he close the gap to Man City?

We refer you to our response to question three. Hopefully? Maybe? Given a fair wind? Not really sure how Arteta can – let alone MUST – answer that question before a ball is kicked.

Shots fired
Further bad news regarding question three for Arteta here from the Daily Star, as ‘Aaron Ramsdale delivers warning to David Raya after Arsenal land £30m Brentford keeper’.

You might want to sit down before reading on, because it’s pretty fiery stuff this. Wouldn’t want to be in Raya’s shoes right now, that’s for sure.

“I’ve done it to other people when I’ve moved to clubs so I’m not going to be thinking that it’s never going to happen to me.

“I think if it happens, it happens and then we’ll fight and we’ll make each other the best version of ourselves because that is what the manager is telling us as well.

“I’m sure whoever plays, me, Matt or whoever comes in, the goalkeeping union, which people will laugh at, is a real thing and the individual disappointment will go away and you put the team first and that goalkeeper first as well.”

Consider yourself well and truly warned, Davey boy.
